So last weekend we were on this family trip and my dad was tailing me. When we pulled up, he chewed me out about checking my brakes. He's like, "Why the heck are your brake lights coming on when you're just slowing down?" Then I realized they light up automatically when I let off the pedal because of this regen stuff. I get it now, it's for safety, so the one behind knows I'm slowing down. But I just want the brake lights to kick in when I actually hit the brakes. Anybody know if I can turn this feature off?

AFAIK, you can't. They're smart enough to light up automatically when you slow down quickly, just like they would if you stepped on the brakes.

They only light up when you slow down a lot, kind of like when you hit the brakes.

Ah, that makes sense now! It's like when your dad got on you for the brake lights coming on while you were just coasting. You wouldn't want someone tailing you and bumping into you just because you're relaxing on the accelerator. That regen braking is all about safety, letting folks know you're slowing down. But yeah, it can be a bit much if you'd rather the brake lights only come on when you actually hit the brakes. I’m not sure if you can turn that feature off entirely, though might be worth checking the settings or asking Tesla
