So I’m juggling the idea of swapping to some 18" winter wheels for my Model Y, but I’m a bit twitchy about the lower load rating compared to the 19" ones. Anyone out there made this switch before? Should I be freaking out about that load rating, or am I good to go? I’ve scoured the internet for answers, but so far, it's been a wild goose chase. Hopefully, someone here can save the day!

I’m in the same boat, thinking of swapping to 18" wheels for my MYP. I’m also a bit worried about the load rating compared to my current 21" ones. If anyone’s made this switch, I’d love to hear if the lower rating is a big deal or not.

If you're concerned about the lower load rating of 18" wheels compared to 19" on your Model Y, you’re right to be cautious! The Model Y has a higher Gross Axle Weight Rating (GAWR) than the Model 3, and even though the wheel specs seem similar, the weight difference matters. For example, 19" wheels need to handle around 3,600 lbs, while 18" aftermarket options are often rated for about 1,500 lbs.

While some people have made the switch, the big issue is that most 18" options don’t meet the required load rating for the Y. If the load is too low, it could lead to issues with ABS, Traction Control, and other safety systems. So unless you find an 18" wheel that meets or exceeds the Y’s load specs, it’s better to stick with something rated for the right weight.
